Taperoo Dunes are proud to announce that we have been awarded the Virgin Coastcare Award at the 2019 State Community Landcare Conference hosted by Landcare Association of SA in Bordertown this week! We had been selected as one of three finalists for the Award so were thrilled to hear that we had actually won the Award itself in recognition of all our hard work carried out in the dunes. It is an honour to receive this Award and such an achievement for a small group such as ours. When we first started the group four years ago, the dunes were infested with destructive and invasive weeds which were suffocating the indigenous plants, and native birds and animals were losing their habitat. The dunes were also being used as a repository for dumping rubbish. In essence, the dunes were being neglected. Over the past four years, our volunteers have been relentless in pulling up the invasive weeds and clearing away the rubbish, and planting indigenous tubestock each year. As a result, we are now seeing a resurgence of many native plants germinating spontaneously in the cleared areas and a large variety of birds and small animals are settling into their newly restored home. The Taperoo Dunes are now being returned to their vibrant natural habitat! Thanks to all our volunteers who have devoted their time and effort since we started the group and to City of Port Adelaide Enfield and Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board for their continued and ongoing support.
